EU foreign policy chief to visit Kurdistan Region

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell will pay a visit to the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, the EU said in a statement.

The EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy arrived in Baghdad on Monday to meet senior officials.

The EU said Borrell would hold talks with Iraqi foreign minister Fuad Hussein, President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.

He would also meet U.N. Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert during his visit to Iraq.

The EU foreign policy chief will travel to Erbil on Tuesday to meet with senior Kurdish officials, including President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Borrell will hold press conferences in Baghdad and Erbil on Monday and Tuesday, according to the statement.

The EU “strongly supports Iraq’s stability and sovereignty, ahead of the early parliamentary elections in October that the EU will be monitoring,” the statement read.
