SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Four members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) were killed in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack near Baghdad on Friday, the group said.

ISIS militants attacked fighters from the PMF, also known as Hashid al-Shaabi, in Tarmiya district, north of Baghdad, the group said in a statement.

Six other Hashid fighters were also wounded in the attack, according to the PMF.

Formed in 2014 to back the Iraqi army in its fight against ISIS militants, the PMF at the time controlled large swathes of the country but have since been integrated into the armed forces.

Some ISIS cells have remained active even after Iraq declared the militant group defeated in 2017, especially in the Tarmiya region and the deserts of northern Iraq.
