Iranian Kurds call for protection after assassination of KDP-I member in Erbil

Iranian Kurds gather in Erbil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iranian Kurds call on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to protect their lives after the assassination of a member of a Kurdish opposition party in Erbil.

Musa Babakhani, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I), was found dead at a hotel in Erbil last week.

The KDP-I is an Iranian Kurdish party that split from the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in 2006.

The party accused Iran of killing Babakhani, saying he was abducted by “two terrorists belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran” in Erbil.

The directorate of Asayish (security) said on Sunday that the suspect who killed Babakhani had fled to Iran through Khanaqin district after he murdered the KDP-I member at the hotel on August 7.

In a letter, as many as 642 civil activists, politicians, journalists, authors and Kurdish figures called on the KRG, Kurdistan parliament, Kurdistan Region’s security council, UNHCR and other organizations to protect their lives.

Two members of Hengaw organization for human rights Arsalan Yarahmadi and Zhila Mustaajer had been threatened in Erbil in the past few days, Esta Media Network has learned.
