SULAIMANI (ESTA) — There has been no illegal act on the two main border crossings with Iran since the deployment of security forces, a spokesman for the deputy premier said on Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani ordered the deployment of the Kurdistan Region’s Asayish operations forces to Bashmakh and Parvez Khan border crossings to prevent smuggling and violation of laws.

Units of the Asayish operations forces were stationed at both border crossings on Monday following the decision.

Samir Hawrami, spokesman for the deputy premier, said the process would continue and that Talabani was “on line with the Asayish forces and the related institutions so as to prevent law breakers completely”.

“No illegal acts have been carried out in the past 24 hours due to the presence of those forces and the Asayish and other forces have been able to completely prevent any smuggling attempt,” he added.

The decision is part of measures taken by Talabani and Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani to root out corruption and smuggling through Sulaimani airport and border crossings in Sulaimani province.

In July, six people were detained on smuggling charges at Bashmakh border crossing following decisions made by the deputy prime minister and co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani to end smuggling on the borders.
