SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi military thwarted an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in Makmour in southwest of Erbil on Monday, Esta’s reporter said.

ISIS militants attacked a checkpoint of the Iraqi military in the town of Makhmour, using a motorcycle, Esta Media Network reporter said.

The Iraqi military exploded the motorcycle before it reached to the checkpoint situated 150 meters from the town center, he added.

There were no casualties, according to the reporter.

Recently, ISIS militants have increased attacks and activities in several Iraqi provinces.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
