SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The health ministry on Monday warned that a “tragic disaster” could occur due to “carelessness” towards coronavirus.

In a statement, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) ministry of health said it had recorded the highest daily rise in coronavirus cases in the Kurdistan Region in the past 24 hours.

“For the first time, the highest rate of infection has been recorded in the Kurdistan Region since the start of the pandemic,” it added, without saying the number.

“A tragic disaster is ahead due to behavior and carelessness toward coronavirus,” it stated.

Kurdish health officials have repeatedly warned that coronavirus cases could rise if people don’t follow health guidelines.

Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said on July 1 that the Kurdistan Region had moved from coronavirus yellow level to orange alert.

The minister warned that the coronavirus had not ended yet and that the Region “is not in a situation where we can remove masks”.

As of Sunday, the Kurdistan Region had recorded 203,590 COVID-19 cases, with 4,580 deaths.
