SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An intelligence officer was killed in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in south of Kirkuk, a security source said on Thursday.

A group of ISIS militants attacked an Iraqi federal police unit in Riyadh sub-district late on Wednesday, a security source told Esta Media Network.

“An officer at the intelligence [agency] was killed in the attack,” said the source, who spoke under condition of anonymity.

ISIS militants intermittently carry out attacks against Iraqi forces in Kirkuk province.

Several members of the security forces had been killed in ISIS attacks in the province in the past weeks.

On Tuesday, a policeman was killed in another ISIS attack in Rashad sub-district in south of Kirkuk.

To clear areas of the militants, the Iraqi security forces launched an operation from three directions in Kirkuk, the security media cell said on Monday.

Three hideouts and a camp belonging to the militant group were destroyed during the operation, it added.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
