Kurdish forces thwart ISIS attack on counter-terrorism service in Erbil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces thwarted an Islamic State (ISIS) attack on the general directorate of counter-terrorism in Erbil, the Region’s security council said on Monday.

The Kurdistan Region’s Security Council released confession footage of an ISIS suspect, who it said intended to carry out an attack in Erbil.

The council said the suspect directed by an ISIS leader was planning to attack the general directorate of counter-terrorism in Erbil to release detainees belonging to the militant group.

“ISIS terrorists planned to target the general directorate of counter-terrorism in Erbil, aiming to free ISIS terrorists and create chaos in Erbil,” the council said.

“The terrorist’s name is Sabhan Abdulsalam and was arrested by the counter-terrorism forces in Erbil before carrying out the terrorist act,” it added.

The suspect confessed in the footage that he had “contacts with ISIS leaders and ISIS caliph had directed him to carry out the act in Erbil”.
