SULAILAMNI (ESTA) — Two Islamic State (ISIS) suspects were detained in Sulaimani in coordination with Kurdish forces in the province, a military spokesman said on Saturday.

Iraqi counter-terrorism service detained eight “terrorists” in separate operations in Sulaimani, Kirkuk and Anbar, said Yehia Rasool, spokesman for commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces.

In Sulaimani, two ISIS suspects were arrested in coordination with the Kurdish security forces in the province, Rasool said in a statement.

Iraqi forces have carried out several operations against ISIS members in coordination with the Kurdish forces in the past months.

The counter-terrorism forces also arrested an Islamic State (ISIS) suspect during another operation in Kirkuk governorate, Rasool said.

Five other ISIS suspects were detained in Anbar province, he stated.

Recently, Iraqi forces have stepped up operations to arrest ISIS members across Iraq.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
