SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji visited Kirkuk on Wednesday to discuss efforts to protect power transmission towers in the province, as attacks on the towers have increased recently.

A security delegation led by Araji arrived in Kirkuk city on Wednesday morning to discuss the security situation with local officials, according to his office.

He discussed ways to enhance security and protect infrastructure, oil installations and power transmission stations and powers, his office said in a statement.

“Kirkuk is important and has a specialty, as it is for all Iraqis, and Kirkuk is for all its citizens and people,” Araji said, according to National Iraqi News Agency.

Recently, Islamic State (ISIS) militants have increased attacks on the transmission towers in different areas in Iraq.

Last week, they exploded several towers in Kirkuk province.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said last week that the hours of power supply had reduced due to “repeated and intentional targeting of electrical towers in a number of provinces”.

In an attempt to limit the targeting of energy towers, the federal government has decided to use drones to protect the towers and identify the parties behind the attacks.
