SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said it rejects the use of violence and sabotage, as its supporters stormed and burned the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Baghdad.
Dozens of PMF supporters stormed and torched the KDP headquarters in Baghdad earlier on Saturday in response to remarks of the party’s member regarding Hashid al-Shaabi.
Footage circulated on social media showing the PMF supporters stood on the Kurdistan Flag and burned posters as they were storming the KDP headquarters.
“We understand the feelings of Iraqis, those who love and are keen on the sacrifices and blood of the people of PMF, and we support freedom of opinion, protest and peaceful demonstration as stipulated in the constitution,” Hashid al-Shaabi said in a statement.
“But we reject the use of violence and sabotage in any way,” it added, calling on its supporters to preserve the “prestige of the state, societal peace and respect the security forces in this sensitive circumstance.”
A KDP official said earlier on Saturday that the federal government had failed to provide necessary protection for the party’s office in Baghdad.
