U.S.-led Coalition provides ammunition, weapons to Iraqi army

The Iraqi military receives ammunition and weapons at Ain al-Asad in Anbar province, May 26, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The U.S.-led Coalition forces provided ammunition and weapons to the Iraqi military, the security media cell said on Thursday.

In a statement, Iraqi Security Media Cell said a unit of the army had received ammunition and weapons from the Coalition forces at Ain al-Asad air base, worth more than $204,000.

Coalition Spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said the United States continued to support the Iraqi forces via the Counter Islamic State Train and Equip Fund, which the Coalition oversees.

“Working together we will maintain pressure on Daesh to ensure there is no resurgence,” Marotto said in a tweet, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
