PUK is against restricting rights and freedoms: co-president

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-president Bafel Talabani said on Sunday the party is against restricting rights and freedoms under the name of law in the Kurdistan Region.  

Talabani met with German Consul-General to Erbil Klemens Semtner at the PUK politburo office in the Region’s capital, according to a statement released by his office.

“The PUK is not with restricting liberty and freedom of expression, and we don’t want the rights and freedoms to be restricted under the name of law, as one of the pillars and sovereignty of the experience of democracy in the Kurdistan Region is the existence of liberty, freedom of expression and peaceful coexistence of all sides,” Talabani said.

He also stressed on the need to use “common language, unity and understanding” to tackle issues between the political parties in the Region, the statement read.

He also considered the “creation of national consensus for the current situation important” in order to reorganize relations with Baghdad on the basis of constitution and laws, according to the statement.

He also described “this step as a way of establishing political stability and security,” his office stated.

Regarding constitution, the PUK co-leader said, “We want to have a constitution in which people are the main goal, and through that way we can secure an appropriate political system and better governance for our people.”
