SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Danish Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen paid an official visit to Iraq on Sunday for talks on military and support for Iraq in the fight against Islamic State (ISIS).

Bramsen met with her Iraqi counterpart Juma Inad at the defense ministry headquarters in Baghdad, state news agency INA reported.

The ministers held a joint press conference following their meeting. The Iraqi defense minister said Bramsen had visited Iraq to strengthen cooperation with Iraq in the field of military.

He thanked the Denmark’s government for providing support to Iraq in the fight against ISIS militants, according to INA.

Bramsen said her visit to Iraq was “important, and we seek to enhance joint cooperation and provide support to Iraq in various fields, especially the military one”.

“We will work to increase cooperation in the field of training Iraqi forces, and raise their capability to face security challenges,” she added.

Denmark took over the leadership of a NATO-led mission training Iraqi security forces from Canada by the end of 2020.

Danish foreign minister Jeppe Kofod said in September that Denmark would use its representation to strengthen the dialogue with Iraq in areas such as migration, counter-terrorism and prosecution of crimes committed by ISIS.

“With our commitment, we help to ensure that Islamic State doesn’t once again gain a foothold in the region and thus the opportunity to threaten Europe and Denmark,” he said.
