SULAIMANI (ESTA) — One Iraqi soldier was killed and five others were wounded in an explosion in south of Kirkuk, Iraqi media reported on Sunday.
National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) reported that an improvised explosive device targeted a military vehicle of the Iraqi army in the village of Zarka near Wadi al-Shay during an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) militants.
Iraqi security forces along with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) conducted an operation against ISIS militants in areas in south of Kirkuk on Thursday, according to Security Media Cell.
On Friday, the Iraqi military said the security forces destroyed 14 ISIS hideouts, a tunnel and a boat during the operation. They also found three stores of M4 rifles, three mobiles and six explosive devices.
The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
