Iran and Iraq signed MoU to confront constant dust storms: INA

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Constant intense dust storms compelled Iran and Iraq to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to confront the dust waves, Iraq state news agency (INA) reported.

“The MoU was signed today between Iraq’s Minister of Environment Jasim Falah and his Iranian counterpart Ali Salajegheh,” INA said.

The Middle East has always been battered by dust and sandstorms, but they have become more frequent and intense in recent years. Thousands of people were hospitalized in Iraq due to the dust storms.

Dust storms have been increasingly turned more often since the last spring, and in several cases, it forced airport closures.

The Impacts of climate change is completely erupted in Iraq, seeing itself in desertification as well as maximum water decrease on the surface sources, the threats freak out the locals and forced many to immigrate from their origin land due to clean water shortage.

Earlier in June, Iraq’s Ministry of Trade announced that the wheat production in 2022 decreased by %40, which marks a huge deficit saying “it resulted from water shortage”.

In the meantime, it’s the third connective year of drought in Iraq. Despite the concerns about environmental issues among the locals, political instability inside the country has worsened the situation more to let the government handle the issue efficiently.
