Iraqi president meets with Kurdistan Region president, deputy prime minister

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi President Barham Salih met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani in Erbil on Thursday.

Solih, arrived in Erbil on Wednesday, discussed with the Kurdish officials the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, including the upcoming early parliamentary elections, a statement by the Region’s presidency said.

They also discussed ways to support preparations for “fair and free elections that serve the mutual interest of the people and all communities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”

The senior Iraqi and Kurdish officials affirmed “the need to resolve disputes and rivalries and to hold dialogue among the political parties,” the presidency’s statement read.

“Discussions also focused on bringing about national unity and a common vision in order to resolve the differences and to face the challenges ahead,” the statement said.

Earlier on Thursday, Salih met with Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani as well as officials from the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
