SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two civilians were wounded in an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Khanaqin district in western Iraq on Tuesday night, a Peshmerga commander said.
Commander Nabil Mohammed told Esta Media Network that ISIS militants attacked the village of Karim Dawd in Khanaqin on Tuesday night, wounding two people.
ISIS militants also killed the head of a village in the district on Monday.
Khanaqin is a disputed area claimed by both the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
Kurdish officials have warned that ISIS remnants are using a security vacuum between the Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the disputed areas.
