SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq has suspended all flights to and from India due to sharp increase in coronavirus cases, according to authorities.

Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authority has instructed all airports in the country to suspend flights with India and prevent entries of tourists from the country, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We would like to inform you about … the suspension of flights between Iraq and India and the prevention of entries of all passengers that coming from Republic of India directly or indirectly, and also the passengers travelling to India,” the Iraqi aviation said.

The suspension of passenger flights between the two countries will remain until further notice, according to the Iraqi civil aviation.

India’s coronavirus death neared the bleak milestone of 200,000 with another 2,771 fatalities reported on Tuesday, while its armed forces pledged urgent medial aid to help battle the staggering spike in infections.

Iraqi parliament’s crisis cell called for strict measures to be taken by the federal government as the Indian variant of the virus is “very close” to entering Iraq.

Iraq had recorded 1,045,010 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, including 15,348 deaths, the health ministry’s figures showed.
