SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region commemorated the 47th anniversary of the bombing of Qaladze town by the former Iraqi Baath regime in 1974.

On April 24, 1974, Iraq’s Baath regime’s warplanes used napalm to attack Qaladze and the University of Sulaimani moved to the town at that time.

As many as 27 houses and 40 shops as well as the town’s hospital, mayor building and the municipality were bombed.

Up to 134 people including students were killed and a number of others were wounded in the attack.

On the same day eight in 1982 a large number of protests were shot in the same town.

The assault was one in series of armed attacks that the Baath regime led by Saddam Hussein had carried out against Kurdish people.

“Today, we remember and honor victims of April 24, 1974 airstrikes against civilians in Qalat Dizah,” Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani mourned “the martyrs of these cruel crimes”, and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said the disaster would “never be forgotten”.
