SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two rockets fell near headquarters of Peshmerga forces in Kifri district in southeast of Kirkuk on Sunday night, according to a Peshmerga commander.
A security source told Esta Media Network that two Katyusha rockets were fired towards Kifri. One of the rockets fell in a market in the city, wounding a civilian.
Commander Dler Mahmoud said the rockets fell 500 meters from the headquarters of the Peshmerga forces in Kifri, but caused no casualties or damages among the Kurdish forces.
“The rockets flew over the headquarters of the Peshmerga forces and fell 500 meters from them,” the commander said in a statement.
The Kurdish forces work to protect the stability of the area, he added. “Such terrorist acts won’t frighten the Peshmerga forces,” he stated.
Kifri is a disputed area claimed by both the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Kurdish officials have warned that Islamic State (ISIS) militants are using a “security vacuum” between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi forces in the disputed areas.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
