One person killed in market blast in Baghdad: Iraqi military

Black smoke rises after an explosion occurred in Habibiyah area east of Baghdad, April 15, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least one Iraqi citizen was killed after a powerful explosion rocked a market in east Baghdad on Thursday, according to the Iraqi military.

Iraqi Security Media Cell said 12 other people were wounded in the explosion which occurred in a market in al-Habibiyah neighborhood in Sadr City.

Five vehicles were also burned in the blast, which sent a cloud of black smoke above the area.

Shafaq News cited a security official as saying that a car bomb parked near a popular market in Sadr district exploded.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic State (ISIS) militants are believed to stage such attacks.

The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
