Kurdistan Region records highest daily death toll from COVID-19

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region recorded its highest number of deaths from coronavirus within 24-hour period this year, official health ministry figures showed on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Region’s health ministry said 17 patients had died from the virus, of which nine were in Duhok. Four other deaths recorded in each Erbil and Sulaimani.

The ministry also recorded 1,159 new cases of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, according to the statement.

As many as 197 cases were in Erbil, 353 in Sulaimani, 541 in Duhok, nine in Halabja and 59 in Garmian, the ministry said.

The Kurdistan Region has recorded a total of 3,831 deaths and 135,815 infections from COVID-19, according to the health ministry’s figures.

The number of new daily infections and deaths has increased sharply in the past weeks.
