SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s tally climbed by 981 new cases on Wednesday, making a new one-day record as the hard-hit Region struggles to control its third wave of infections, the health ministry data showed.
In a statement, the Region ministry of health said it had recorded 218 new cases in Erbil, 264 in Sulaimani, 449 in Duhok, 30 Garmian and 20 Raparin.
The ministry further said it had registered 10 new deaths in Erbil, Sulaimani and Duhok in the past 24 hours, while it had logged 428 recoveries.
The Kurdistan Region’s total number of infections rose to 122,160, with 3,670 deaths and 109,662 recoveries, according to the health ministry.
On Tuesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced new restrictions to curb spread of the coronavirus in the Region.
Schools and universities remain closed until April 10 under the new restrictions, according to the KRG ministry of interior. Restaurants, cafeterias, clubs, game centers and other public places will be closed at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. every day.
The ministry also said travel between the Kurdistan Region and other Iraqi provinces would be halted on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The measures came after Kurdish health officials warned of a surge in coronavirus cases in the Region.
