Iraq receives 336,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses through U.N. initiative

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq has received 336,000 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine on Thursday through the U.N. Covax program, according to the UNAMI.

The country of 40 million inhabitants launched vaccinations at the start of March with 50,000 Sinopharm jabs donated by China.

“This is a historic step towards the global goal to ensure equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines around the world and is part of a first allocation of vaccines to Iraq,” UNAMI said in a statement.

Coronavirus cases in Iraq have soared, with a new record of 6,513 new confirmed infections in 24 hours, including 33 deaths, registered on Thursday.

Officially, 815,605 cases and 14,128 deaths have been recorded in Iraq, whose health ministry has yet to be allocated a budget.
