SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said on Saturday a spirit of national unity is needed to solve issues in Iraq, as Kurds celebrate Newroz

Hennis-Plasschaert extended her wishes to the Kurdish people and other people celebrating Newroz in the world, saying “Nowruztan Piroz Bet”.

“Nowruz, the celebration of renewal of life and harmony, arrives with the advent of Spring, bringing new hope after a bleak year,” the special representative of the U.N. secretary-general for Iraq said in a statement.

“This renewed hope is to be embraced as we strive towards a better future. With sufficient political will, a spirit of national unity and genuine determination, solutions can and must be reached,” she added.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Newroz in 2010.

Iraq suffers from chronic mismanagement, corruption and a steady level of violence often linked to rivalry between Iran and the United States in the region 18 years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
