Kurdistan Region logs highest daily rise in coronavirus cases this year

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region recorded 541 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the health ministry data showed on Wednesday, the highest daily rise this year.

In a statement, the Region’s health ministry said it had registered 223 cases in Erbil, 133 in Sulaimani, 169 in Duhok, nine in Garmian and seven in Raparin.

The ministry also logged three deaths in Erbil and Garmian, and 208 recoveries in the previous 24 hours, according to the statement.

The Region’s total number of infections rose to 113,998 COVID-19 cases, including 3,577 deaths and 106,092 recoveries, the ministry’s figures showed.

Minister of Health Saman Barzanji warned earlier on Wednesday that higher numbers of infections are expected over the next several days as the new coronavirus variants spread rapidly.

The Iraqi health ministry said earlier that it had recorded 5,663 new coronavirus cases in the country, with 33 new deaths.

Iraq has registered 774,015 coronavirus cases, with 13,860 deaths.
