SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Hundreds of Iraqis attended funerals in a village north of Baghdad on Saturday for eight people killed in attacks claimed by Islamic State (ISIS) militant group.
Six members of the family, including two women, along with a lawyer and a policeman were killed in attacks which ISIS claimed it had carried out on Friday.
AFP cited witnesses as saying that men in military uniform had carried out the three attacks on the victims’ homes in the village of Al-Bou Dor.
The Iraqi military said it was a revenge attack ordered by a villager who had been driven out by neighbors who accused him of being an ISIS member, according to AFP.
ISIS claimed in a statement that those targeted on Friday had been spying for the Popular Mobilization Forces, also known as Hashid al-Shaabi.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
