SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.S.-led Coalition forces conducted two airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Nineveh and Saladin provinces, destroying a hideout and a tunnel
The Iraqi military said in a statement that Coalition warplanes carried out an airstrike targeting an ISIS hideout where 10 militants were hiding in Mount Adaya in Nineveh.
The security forces later killed two other militants who were wearing explosive belts as they started a search operation after the airstrike, the statement read.
A U.S.-led Coalition fighter jet also conducted an airstrike in al-Aitha area in Saladin province, destroying a “large tunnel”, it said.
Coalition Spokesman Col. Wayne Marrtto confirmed Coalition forces had launched two “coordinated airstrikes” in the provinces.
“There is no sanctuary for Daesh,” Marotto said in a tweet, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
