SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The security forces arrested six Iraqis for attempting to cross the Syrian border into Iraq, the military said late on Tuesday.

Iraqi security media cell said the security forces arrested the group in a “tight ambush” in al-Abtakh village in Rabia district as they were illegally crossing the Syria border into Iraq.

“It turned out that they were six people with Iraqi citizenship and illegally residing in Syria,” the military said in a statement.

Iraqi forces have detained dozens of people including Syrians for attempting to cross the border between Syria and Iraq in the past months.

Iraq has tightened security along 600 km border with Syria to curb the movement of Islamic State (ISIS) militants, drug smuggling and other illegal activities.
