SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish politician Rozh Nuri Shaways died at the age of 74 in the Kurdistan Region’s capital, Erbil, on Monday.
Shaways, who is a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Politburo, died at a hospital in Erbil on Monday morning due to health complications.
He was born in Sulaimani city in 1947. He served as the first Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) between September 26, 1996 to December 20, 1999.
He then became speaker of the Kurdistan National Assembly between 1999 and 2003.
He also served as one of the two Iraqi Vice Presidents in the interim government established in 2004. He was also a deputy prime minister in the government led by Ibrahim al-Jaafari and later held the same post under Nouri al-Maliki.
Shaways served as deputy prime minister under Haider al-Abadi from September 2014 to August 2015.
