PUK priority to secure Kurdistan Region’s budget, salaries: co-president

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-president Bafel Talabani said the party’s priority is to secure budget and salaries of the Kurdistan Region’s people.

Talabani met with UK ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hickey and Consul-General James Thornton in Erbil on Wednesday.

They discussed further cooperation and assistance between both sides, which serve the interests of the Kurdistan Region and security and stability in the region, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

Talabani highlighted the political, economic and security developments as well as issues between Erbil and Baghdad during the meeting with the British diplomats, his office added.

He also discussed the PUK’s efforts to pass the situation and reach an agreement on the basis of Iraqi constitution, the statement read.

“The PUK’s priority is to secure the Kurdistan Region’s budget and salaries,” Talabani was cited as saying, presenting several political and national ways to overcome the crisis.

The two sides also discussed threats posed by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in several areas in Iraq. They stressed on further cooperation and assistance to protect security and stability there, according to the statement.
