SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Clashes erupted between Iraq’s paramilitary forces and Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Khanaqin district on Tuesday, Esta’s reporter said.
Reporter Zimnako Yahyayee said Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) fighters, known as Hashid al-Shaabi, clashed with ISIS militants in Kuna Masi area in Naftkhana, east of Diyala province.
At least five PMF fighters were killed and six others were wounded during the battle, the reporter added.
A security source told Esta Media Network that ISIS militants attacked Hashid al-Shaabi in the area on Tuesday morning.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
