SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A shepherd was killed after a land mine belonging to Islamic State (ISIS) militants exploded in Tuz Khurmatu south of Kirkuk, Esta’s reporter said on Sunday.
Esta Media Network Reporter Zimnako Yahyayee said the mine exploded after the shepherd tried to touch it in the village of Abud in western Tuz Khurmatu.
“The blast killed the shepherd and wounded his son,” the reporter added.
Tuz Khurmatu is a disputed area claimed by both the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
