SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces arrested three members of Islamic State (ISIS) in Nineveh province, the intelligence service said on Monday.
In a statement, the Iraqi Intelligence Service said the three “terrorists” had worked in the so-called ISIS police in separate areas in the province.
“They admitted their affiliation with those criminal gangs and participated in several terrorist attacks, including imposing royalties and illegal financial penalties,” the intelligence service added.
The three militants were arrested in accordance with Article 4 of counter-terrorism law, according to the intelligence agency.
Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Nineveh, Anbar and Baghdad.
Iraqi forces detained an ISIS leader and his assistant in Baghdad on Sunday.
On Saturday, Iraqi security media cell said the security forces had arrested 26 “terrorists” during an operation to pursue ISIS remnants in Nineveh province.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
