SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Total to execute “large and promising projects” in the Middle Eastern country, the Iraqi oil ministry said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the oil ministry said the agreement was signed during a visit by Total’s Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne to Baghdad, where he met with Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

The memorandum of understanding focuses on use of natural gas and clean energy, according to the oil ministry.

“Iraq signs memorandum of understanding with French company Total, the first step towards the implementation of large projects in the field of oil and gas,” French embassy in Baghdad said in a tweet.

Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar affirmed Iraq’s keenness to cooperate with international companies to develop oil and energy sectors in the country, the ministry’s statement read.

“This memorandum of understanding is the culmination of a series of talks and discussions that began six months ago,” Abdul Jabbar said.
