SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An Islamic State (ISIS) emir was killed during an operation launched by Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region’s Garmian administration, a Kurdish commander said on Saturday.

Commander of Peshmerga’s Unit 70 Mustafa Chawrash said the Peshmerga forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition launched an operation against ISIS militants in Garmian on Friday and would last 48 hours.

The commander told Esta Media Network that an ISIS emir was killed during the operation in Duraji area in Garmian.

“Three ISIS militants raiding a motorcycle were bombed,” the commander said. “One of them was killed while the other two managed to escape.”

The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
