SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Senior Kurdish officials on Thursday condemned a twin suicide bombing in central Baghdad, killing at least 28 people.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said in a tweet that Erbil stands ready to provide care and assistance to victims of the explosions.
“Deeply saddened by the news of the terror attacks in Baghdad. I convey my sympathy to the victims and their families and wish them strength in this difficult time,” Barzani tweeted.
Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said the ‘terrorist attack” showed that Iraqis need to unify joint efforts and put aside differences to defeat and eliminate terrorism.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist operation that targeted civilians in Baghdad,” Talabani said in a statement he posted on his official Facebook page.
Kurdistan Region’s Presidency expressed condolence to family of those killed in the blasts, hoping speedy recovery for the wounded.
“We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks that brutally targeted people in Baghdad … The Kurdistan Region is ready to welcome the wounded people in its hospitals and provide all kinds of medical assistance to them,” the presidency said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani also denounced the explosions, saying “terror is against life and tranquility, and the common enemy of all of us.”
“The continuity of coordination is needed to eliminate terrorism,” Barzani said in a statement. “I hope those who are behind this crime will be brought to justice with help of all related institutions.”
The Iraqi military said two attackers wearing explosive vests blew themselves up among shoppers at a crowded market in Tayaran Square in central Baghdad.
Iraq’s director of civil defense Kazem Buhan said the blasts killed at least 28 people and wounded 73 others, Iraqi national news agency reported.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Iraq has seen assaults perpetrated by both the Islamic State (ISIS) in recent months.
