SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani met with British Consul-General in Erbil James Thornton in the Region’s capital on Sunday, saying the party is with a constitution accepted by people.

The PUK co-president discussed with the British diplomat the latest political, economic and security developments in the Region and Iraq, according to a statement by Talabani’s office.

He stressed the need to find a way to reach understanding to tackle issues and make agreements based on common interests and constitution, the statement read.

“If we want to keep the strength of Kurds’ role in the central government and be the decisive point of issues and problems as in the past, we certainly need a national Kurdistani front, that reflects all views and different colors, and that is the factor to secure our rights at this stage,” Talabani was cited as saying.

“Arrogance and distance from Baghdad … will first damage our people and shrink our Region,” he added.

Regarding constitution, Talabani said the PUK “is with a constitution which is accepted by people, and we will not allow this national and patriotic issue to be passed by majority or minority,” the statement said.

He further said, “we are working to draft a constitution which serves all people and develops our Region, not serves parties and individuals.”
