SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi military said on Tuesday that explosions reported in north of Babil province were attacks carried out by Islamic State (ISIS) militants on several transmission towers.
“Some transmission towers in the Bahbahani area, north of Babil governorate, were attacked and sabotaged by ISIS terrorist gangs,” Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a tweet.
Some Iraqi media reported that airstrikes targeted Iranian-backed militias in Jurf al-Sakhar area in Babil late on Monday.
Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen cited sources as saying explosions heard in Jurf al-Sakhar are were caused by airstrikes and that American aircraft were flying over the Al-Qaim area along the Iraqi-Syrian border.
The U.S. Central Command and Embassy in Baghdad denied that no airstrikes were carried out by the United States in the province on Monday night.
“Explosions reported earlier today about 40 miles outside of Baghdad, Iraq, in the town of Jurf Sakhar were not the result of U.S. military action,” Captain Bill Urban, a spokesman for the U.S. central command.
“We are seeing reports of potential explosions near Jurf as-Sakhr, south of Baghdad. We can confirm that no U.S. personnel or assets were in the vicinity of Jurf as-Sakhr and that there was no U.S. involvement in this alleged incident,” a U.S. embassy spokesperson said.
