PUK co-leader calls for more support from China for Kurdistan Region

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Monday called for more support from China for the Kurdistan Region in the sectors of economy and culture. 

The PUK co-leader met with Chinese Consul-General in Erbil Ni Ruchi in Dabashan area in Sulaimani city on Monday.

Both sides discussed progress in relations, assistance and cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and China as well as the historical relationship between the PUK and China, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

Talabani called on the Chinese consul-general to further support the Kurdistan Region in the sectors of economy and culture, the statement read.

“[Talabani] expressed all kinds of assistance and facilitation in that regard,” the statement said.

The PUK co-leader and the Chinese diplomat also discussed the latest political and security developments in the region and they evaluated Erbil-Baghdad relations as well as the budget issue, according to the statement.

Talabani stressed that the issues between Baghdad and Erbil should be resolved “in a way that first benefits the Region’s people”, the statement cited him as saying.
