Kurdistan parliament speaker apologizes to Esta’s reporter for guards’ attack

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayaq (C) meets Esta Media Network reporter Ayub Ali and cameraman Yousif in Erbil, January 11, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayaq on Monday apologized to Esta Media Network reporter for an attack carried out by two parliament’s guards last week.

Reporter Ayub Ali was attacked by two guards of the Kurdistan parliament as he was getting remarks from a lawmaker inside the parliament on January 6.

Ali and his cameraman Yousif visited the Kurdistan Parliament on Monday at the request of parliament’s speaker.

The speaker has promised to investigate the incident and the guards who attacked him, Ali said following his meeting with Fayaq.

“She promised all the guards would be informed that no journalists should be prevented from covering,” Ali added.

Following the attack, the Metro Center for Journalists’ Rights and Advocacy called on the parliament’s presidency, including speaker, deputy speaker and a secretary, to “immediately investigate those people who attacked a journalist in front of the head of Kurdistan Islamic Union bloc inside the parliament.”

“We condemn this act, and we call on the parliament’s presidency to not only appear as watchers from the parliament’s windows, and investigate those people,” the watchdog said.
