SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The New Generation bloc in the Kurdistan parliament said on Wednesday that one of its lawmakers was attacked with “brass knuckles”.
Head of New Generation bloc Kazim Faruq said in a press conference that lawmaker Sipan Amedi was attacked due to the bloc’s stance against corruption.
“We will confront them if they confront us,” Faruq told reporters, standing next to Sipan Amedi whose forehead was swollen from the attack.
Lawmaker Amedi said a group of KDP lawmakers attacked him with “brass knuckles” inside the parliament.
“How a lawmaker brings brass knuckles to the parliament. How a lawmaker uses such mechanism,” lawmaker from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc Hawre Mala Star told reporters.
“If we were inside the parliament’s hall, we would not have allowed the attack on the lawmaker,” he said, noting that there were a few lawmakers inside the parliament when he was attacked.
The Kurdistan parliament held an extraordinary session to approve Kamal Atrushi as the minister of natural resources, who was nominated by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
As many as 45 lawmakers from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), 17 from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), seven from Change Movement, 11 from the minorities and one from Sardam faction voted in favor of Atrushi.
