SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday conveyed his congratulations to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) for the successful party congress.
In a message, Barzani expressed his felicitations on the triumph of the congress and the appointment of the new leadership of the PUK. He extended his congratulations to the party members and supporters as well.
“I extend my congratulations to you, as well as all members and supporters of your party. It is my hope that you will embark on a new phase dedicated to serving the people and the country,” Barzani said in a message.
Barzani expressed his hope that the new PUK leadership take decisive actions towards unity and solidarity, advancing achievements, protecting the country, and prioritizing the best interests of the Kurdish people, according to the message.
The PUK’s fifth congress took place over the weekend in Sulaimani, gathering PUK members from across Kurdistan and abroad to discuss the party’s future direction and elect a new leadership.
Bafel Talabani was re-elected as the party president, and several new individuals were added to the party’s leadership council following the successful conclusion of the congress.
Having been a significant player in Kurdish politics for decades, the PUK was established in 1975 by Jalal Talabani, the father of Bafel Talabani.
