SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region’s second dominant party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), is set to hold its congress this year, according to a statement on Sunday.
Chaired by the Party’s President, Bafel Talabani, the PUK politburo on Sunday held an ordinary meeting in the disputed-Kirkuk City, discussing issues related to the Kurdistan Region’s situation, including the elections and reforms within Peshmerga Ministry.
“The PUK is continuing on the national and Kurdistani paths to advocate the people of the Kurdistan Region,” Talabani said at the outset of the meeting, according to a statement released by his office.
Talabani stressed that his party’s priority is to separate the people’s livelihood from the political conflicts between Erbil and Baghdad. “
Our people’s livelihood is a red line and we are ready to defend it by all means necessary,” he said.
The statement added that Talabani hailed his party and its members for the recent milestone achievements of the PUK in developing its relations recently on Kurdistan, Iraq, and the international domain.
“The PUK’s unwavering strategy is in the service of our people,” he added. Talabani in his words also highlighted the disputed-Kirkuk City which is widely known as the Jerusalem of Kurds in Iraq.
“Kirkuk is a part of the PUK’s body, it will remain as the Kurdistan’s Jerusalem and we will defend the spirit of coexistence.”
The statement further indicated that the meeting also highlighted the internal situation of the PUK, deciding to hold the 5th party’s congress on September 27 this year.
