SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The representative for the Kurdistan Region’s non-contract teacher was arrested on Sunday after attempting to stage a protest in the city of Erbil.

The arrest was coupled with a protest that was set to be held by the non-contract teachers who have been long calling on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to fulfill their righteous demands.

“Ali Rauf, the general representative for the Kurdistan Region’s non-contract teacher was arrested by Erbil security forces,” Esta Media Network reporter said.

He also revealed that Karzan Physics, who is also a representative for the non-contract teachers was arrested as well.

There are more than 33,000 non-contract teachers across the Kurdistan Region who make up the bulk of the Kurdish education sector. They have a long-standing demand for employment and full contract from the KRG.

The government has also failed in paying the wage on time. They suffer from delays in receiving their wage.

The non-contract teachers are paid based on the number of lessons they are given per day. The minimum amount per lesson given to teachers holding a bachelor’s degree is 4,000 Iraqi dinars ($2.7).

The KRG has so far could not meet the non-contract teachers’ demand. For years, they have held dozens of protests and rallies, particularly in Erbil where the KRG council of ministers is stationed, in protest of the government’s failure to take action.
