SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Bafel Jalal Talabani on Sunday condemned an Islamic State (ISIS) attack on the Peshmerga forces in Diyala province, saying more plans needed to confront attacks.

A group of ISIS militants attacked a point of the Peshmerga forces in Kulajo sub-district in Diyala province on Saturday night.

Five members of the Kurdish forces were killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) hit a unit of the Peshmerga forces who went to back the other forces attacked by the militants.

“I look at the repetition of these terrorist attacks on the frontlines of the Peshmerga forces in the disputed territories with great concern,” Talabani said in a statement.

“We need more plans, joint program and coordination, especially the intensification of further joint work between the Peshmerga forces and Iraqi military to confront ISIS remnants and to prevent their movement, which have become a serious threat on those areas,” he added.

Talabani called for the security dossier of the disputed territories to be managed in partnership and other perspectives for greater stability, security and tranquility.

ISIS militants have increased attacks against Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the disputed areas claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.

Earlier this month, the militants carried out two attacks against the Peshmerga forces in the disputed areas.

On October 31, two members of the Peshmerga forces were killed in another ISIS attack near Prde, south of Erbil.

The Peshmerga ministry said the militants continued to use a security gap between the Iraqi and Kurdish forces to attack the Peshmerga.

Earlier on Sunday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said ISIS attacks were a “serious and dangerous message”, calling for coordination and cooperation between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi military.
