SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani on Monday urged the Kurdish political parties to be united in negotiations concerning the federal hydrocarbon law with Baghdad.
The Deputy Prime Minister received the outgoing Canadian Ambassador to Iraq, Gregory Galligan.
During the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister commended the Canadian diplomat’s pivotal role in strengthening relations between Canada and the Kurdistan Region.
He also welcomed the incoming chief of the Canadian Embassy office in Erbil, Tammy Ames, wishing her all success.
Discussions between Talabani and the Canadian officials included the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
They agreed that the outstanding issues between the Region and Baghdad must be resolved as soon as possible through dialogue and understanding.
In the meantime, they touch upon the federal hydrocarbon law, where Talabani highlighted that the law is a “sensitive” issue.
“Baghdad and Kurdistan interests must be taken into account in passing the law,” he said. “The law needs further talks and negotiations between the parties,” he added.
Talabani also warned the Kurdistan Region political parties to be united in negotiations with Baghdad in order to fight for the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights.
Speaking on the overdue general election of the Kurdistan Region, the Deputy Prime Minister called for holding a “pure” and “clean” election, calling for addressing the problems through dialogue.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Canadian Ambassador praised Talabani’s role in the political processes, demanding Talabani to be continued in his efforts to reform and digitize the government.
