Health workers protest in Erbil for not receiving salaries

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Health workers who once were on the frontline of combating Coronavirus protested in Erbil on Wednesday as the government has been unable to provide them with their salaries, Esta reporter said.

Coronavirus health workers in the Kurdistan Region capital were ralied before the Region Ministry of Health building, the reporter said.

According to their words, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been unable to pay them their salaries for more than five months since July.

Apart from this, the “brave” health workers who were once used to combat the novel Covid-19 on the very frontlines, have been unable to get a new employment contract or full-contract from the government.

“It’s been more than six months that our contracts have been outdated but the government refused to renew them,” a health worker told Esta reporter.

Esta reporter interviewed another health worker who was in the rally before the Ministry building and said that they have been staying there for a “very long time since morning,” before the building.

“We were not been able to see the health Minister until this point to address him about the issue,” he added.

“We fought since the early eruption of the pandemic where others refused to do so, but they no longer need us,” and “We demand to not forget what we had done.”

“We have been promised to resolve our problems, but our work is slow-moving,” and “we fear that the government will not comply with our demands,” said another health worker.

Esta Media Network has learned that the health workers who were rallying, are still continuing to work despite not receiving salaries and rewards.

According to health officials at least 89 health workers died because of COVID-19 in the line of duty fighting the pandemic in the Kurdistan Region.
