SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani on Sunday said we should unify efforts to serve our people.
Commemorating Ashura, a major Islamic-Shiite observance, Talabani in a message said this occasion should inspire the different nations of Iraq to preserve the spirit of brotherhood.
“We should unify our efforts to succeed in the reform, serving our people, and work for the sake of goodness, as well as generosity,” he said.
Ashura is observed on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar to commemorate the death of the martyr Imam Hussein bin Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 ad, according to Islamic Shiite sources.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year when warfare is forbidden. It is held to be the second holiest month after Ramadan, according to Islamic sources.
“We commemorate Imam Hussien with honor, may this occasion inspire us to unity and overcome the obstacles,” Talabani added.
